Bo Bice/You Take Yourself With You (Lyrics)

I hate this town, I can’t even count the reasons
Don’t know where I’m bound, all I know is that I’m leaving
Down a dusty road that’s been calling me for years
Daddy just shook his head, Mama was fighting back the tears
I said time to go, there aint nothing left but leaving
When you know you know, you just can’t fight that feeling

You can climb the highest mountain, go where no one’s ever gone
On a crowded city sidewalk, you might find yourself alone
In the middle of the desert, anywhere the wind blows
Son you take yourself with you, wherever you go

Got a taste of the city life, and them rollin’ hills
Man, them LA nights, gave this country boy a thrill
But I never felt right, like I ever fit in
So I kept moving on, now it’s time to roll again
When it’s time to go, there aint nothing left but leaving
When you know you know, like the changing of the seasons

You can climb the highest mountain, go where no one’s ever gone
On a crowded city sidewalk, you might find yourself alone
In the middle of the desert, anywhere the wind blows
Son you take yourself with you, wherever you go

Now I found out the hard way, and I made my own mistakes
But my Daddy’s words were with me every step of the way

You can climb the highest mountain, go where no one’s ever gone
On a crowded city sidewalk, you might find yourself alone
In the middle of the desert, anywhere the wind blows
Son you take yourself with you, wherever you go
Son you take yourself with you, wherever you go

“You Take Yourself With You” is an emotionally charged song. It goes to show that you can never leave your roots.

  1. This is a powerful song; one I can relate to. To me, this song reinforces that wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, you are there amongst the midst of it. There is the reality that you are responsible for the type of person you have become.

  2. This song for me, has come at a time that my daughter feels she needs to move away, that she can leave her mistakes behind and start a new life. I gave her the words to this song because the meaning to me is that no matter where you go, utimately it is what is inside you and what you do with it, that will make you who you are. It is not the region you live. No matter where you go, you take yourself with you….

  3. I vividly remember the first time I heard my daughter say, “I hate this town ..” I think every parent dreads the thought of losing a child, but we all face a moment of truth when it’s time to let go. For me, You Take Yourself With You is a song I relate to from a parents point of view. You just hope that you’ve instilled all the right values and where ever the road leads it brings them back around to you again.

The bottom line is that you can’t run away from anything. You have to wake up every morning and be happy with yourself.

  4. I love the song. It has such a powerful and factual meaning. No matter where you go in life, you have to look in that mirror and live with the person looking back at you. You can never run away from who you are or from where you came.

    Great song, Bo!!!!

  5. This is one of my favorite songs on the CD. To me it represents the normal order of life. There comes a time that young people have to spread their wings and find their place in the world. It may take some time and some hard experiences to do that. But, no matter where they go, or the ciircumstances, when they look at themselves in the mirror, they realize that the person they see has been there all along the way.

  6. I actually cried the first time I heard this song. I relate to it because I have moved around all my life…and sometimes I have hated the town I have been in..and its funny…the moves have not been all my choice…some have been…but many have been job related etc. The thing is…that somehow…its true..when its time to go..its time to go. And while you may end up some place that you are not happy about, life is what you make of it and you do take yourself with you wherever you go. So you had better like yourself and the person that you have become because no matter what you can not run from that. To me it means..bloom where you are planted even if you don’t feel you fit in..be the best person you can be.

    Great song, Bo!!!!

  8. Thank you so much for the lyrics. which depict one of life’s lessons that applies to each and everyone of us. However, it is the music and the depth and sincerity of Bo’s voice that brings this song home. Perfect single,as it’s theme is universal.

  9. For me this song means Bo may have more people realizing just how talented he is and I see him gaining respect from his peers, which has to be important to him. And being optimistic, I’d like to hope he has a hit on his hands. It’s a personal song to him, and speaks to the love his parents have for him and likewise .. and of the crazy ride he’s been on. But I know that’s not what you meant ..

I think it’s a song everyone can relate to, both as a young person and as a parent. It’s hard to let the kids go, yet it’s a part of life, a part of them growing up. Children need to spread their wings and learn life’s lessons. But they need to know that you’ll be there for them. And yes, the best lesson they can learn is that no matter where they go or what they do, they need to face themselves every day. Home is where the heart is, sometimes you just have to follow it.

  10. I can remember the first time I heard this song. I was watching on the internet Bo’s Wednesday night service. The song touched my heart because it is so universal. We have all left home and many of us have had children leave home. I remember when it was my son’s time to go. He was just behaving dreadful, acting out in so many ways. I finally sat down with him and said, son you don’t have to kick your way out of the nest. It’s normal to want to fly and try your wings. You have my permission to go out and experience the world, but remember you are always loved. All life lessons are best learned by experience.

YTYWY brings back so many memories. Bo you have a wonderful universal song and I hope it is shared over many radio stations soon.
